Work in the morning. In afternoon I went out to get presents. Came home and found lots of cards, including one from Miles with a special photograph of PE by Cecil Beaton, and a lovely one from the princesses, of a little eighteenth-century girl, picking bluebells in a white frock, with a wide pink sash and a picture hat.

The morning seemed to drag by â I am so terribly bored with work and long for a few days rest. It doesnât seem credible that I have got to go on working every day over Christmas. When I think of it, my soul rises in rebellion; the only thing is not to think of it and let my mind dwell on other things. That is why Daddy is unhappy, because he can never get away from realities â we both hate them equally and in the same manner, but I am able to push them from me and be comparatively happy in a world of my own creation, and it is only when they flood back on me, or take possession, that I lose all hope and interest in life. Now I always try and think that however bored I am, the day must come to an end, and even though the next day may be just the same as the last, it must inevitably bring one nearer to those that, one hopes, will bear in their train the realisation of at least some of our wishes. Elizabeth [Christie-Miller] and I had tea alone, and we had one of those discussions which somehow never fail to upset me â she praised the idea of the modern woman taking a more active part in the world and deplored my view of marriage as the only vocation of any well-born girl but I have been brought up in that tradition and never can I understand that anyone should entertain other ideals.
